With the local tragedy of beautiful 4th grader Hailey Owens abduction and death, I've been rethinking some of my 'careful mom' tactics. My children have been on me for being too strict, especially {M} my almost 13 year old. When we shop - we still stick together. It dawned on me yesterday that my children need a reminder. No matter how many times I tell my middle son {V} not to speak to strangers, he still does! He even told a lady at the dog park our whole address and asked her if we could walk our dogs together. ~ V is not just naive, he does have autism, so with him - it's harder to grasp the stranger danger.
The media reports of horrific crimes to children all over the world. We need more advocates like Nancy Grace. But if I could just pray or wish all the bad away...that would be ideal. But in reality, I knew I had to make a list of actions to make sure my children are covered. Here are 3 first steps I took.
Monday they started self defense karate class. Now if only I could keep them from practicing on each other at home...

Then we went to the library and checked out a movie that for older kids...it's kinda on the goofy side. But overall, it was still was an outside reinforcement that someone other than mom & dad voiced the importance of when it's okay to speak to a stranger and when it's not. My boys giggled, A LOT...but stayed in tune with it from beginning to end. Ironically, after watching this video, THEY jumped to the chance to reminded ME when we were shopping tonight not to talk to a stranger. The DVD is called The Safe Side: Stranger Safety by America's Most Wanted John Walsh & Julie Clark

I also made a DNA kit for each boy - God Forbid I Ever Need It! In each sterile baggie is a swab of saliva, hair, fingernail clippings, finger print and a current picture of them. We were fortunate to receive our 3 for free from Pennsylvania State Police when at the fair when we were there. There are multiple sites that you can order from - this link is for a site that is currently on sale for $2.93

~ Finally, I found this FREE Safety Treat is a service that I just signed my family up for here in North West Arkansas is call Smart911. This video is from a news report in Florida, but anyone in any state can register for this benefit.
After you register online, all first responders will be provided important information that will help them address your emergency. This information - includes current location {even from cell phone!}, medical issues, medications, pets, residential access points, emergency contacts, etc....That help Police, Fire and EMS locate and help you faster than calling 911 alone ~ and they are better prepared. It's kinda like, help them so they can help you! For more info, I posted the link below.
